August 31 Update
Submitted By Darcy Elliott on Thursday, September 3, 2020
It’s the end of August and while the hockey season is two months away there is still much back and forth going on between the Coronation Minor Hockey Association (CMHA) Executive, the Hamilton Minor Hockey Council (HMHC), and the City of Hamilton.

Some new information (in bold) and some reminders of where we are at.

As you may have read in past newsletters, seen in The Spec, or heard while walking your dog in the park (north end of Churchill, 9am), Coronation is not opening this season. Instead, a limited number of rinks are opening citywide and different age groups will be playing in different centres. As of now it is:

Initiation Program (U7), Novice (U9)* - Mohawk Quad Pad
Atom (U11), PeeWee (U13), Bantam (U15) - Lawfield Arena
Midget (U18), Juvenile (U21) - Chedoke Arena

*Novice (U9) may be at Rosedale.

The HMHC has imposed a September 15 deadline for registration across the city. This means, to guarantee a spot for the season, you will need to register via the Coronation website by September 15.After that the HMHC will be allocating ice times based on registration numbers so it is possible that there will be no space available in certain age groups. We are awaiting word on when payment will be required, but for now the key is the September 15 registration deadline.

The question we have been getting the most is “who will my kids be playing with.” It is a very good question and one we have been pressing the HMHC to provide an answer to. Unfortunately they have not yet provided an answer.

Our position is that our kids want to play on teams with their friends. They have grown up playing with them and, even with all the mess of 2020, there is no reason to change that. There may be some cases where we don’t have enough Coronation players for full teams, so we would have to combine players from those with other Associations. We would want this to be a last resort and, if it does happen, to take a group of kids not just one or two.

That said, we are at a point where if you want to play in 2020 you need to register now.

To summarize, these are the key things to know:

1. The registration deadline is September 15, as set by the HMHC. If you haven’t registered by then, there may not be space available.

2. You will be playing at a different rink, depending on your age group. If you have multiple kids you could be at multiple rinks.

3. It is not yet known if our kids will be on teams primarily made up of Coronation kids. We are pushing very hard for this but we don’t expect to know before September 15.

4. Payment is not yet due. We will let you know when it is.

5. All hockey is 4-on-4 with no Selects.

6. Those wanting to play Juvenile, we don’t yet have registration information but the HMHC is seeing if there is enough interest for teams. We have reached out to the Juvenile aged players in a separate email but if you know of anyone else please have them contact us.

As always we are here to take your questions. Playing hockey is important to many of our kids and they are looking for some fun this winter. Our job, as the Coronation executive, is to represent the Coronation families to ensure our players do have fun and stay safe during the season.
